THE PRACTICAL PART
Edit a Photoshop Smart Object without losing the scene.
A practical workflow for placing your design, saving the linked object and checking the finished presentation.
Start with the actual file
Download the mockup from its original creator. Check the file format, software requirements and license before opening it. Keep an untouched copy of the downloaded file; work in a separate copy so you can return to the original scene.
This workflow is for layered Photoshop mockups that include editable Smart Objects. Layer names and editing controls vary between creators. If a file includes instructions, read those first.
1. Find the design layer
Open the PSD in Photoshop and look in the Layers panel for a layer such as “Your design”, “Place artwork here” or “Edit me”. Expand grouped layers if necessary. A Smart Object layer has a small badge on its thumbnail.
Double-click the Smart Object thumbnail. Photoshop opens the contents in a separate document tab. Double-clicking the layer name only renames it.
2. Place your artwork inside
Add your design to the document that just opened. Use a vector source or an image with enough pixels for the presentation you need. Preserve the proportions of your artwork as you scale it.
Use the Smart Object canvas as your guide. On a label or poster, artwork often needs to fill the whole printable area. If the mockup includes safe-area guides, use them rather than guessing where a seam or fold will fall.
3. Save the contents, then return
Save the Smart Object contents with File → Save. Return to the main mockup tab and check that the scene has updated. Keep the original content document name and format unless the creator’s instructions tell you otherwise.
A mockup with several editable surfaces may require you to repeat this process for each Smart Object. Do not assume that every panel shares the same artwork.
4. Adjust only what the file supports
Some mockups include layers for background color, object color, shadows and highlights. Change these separately from the design layer. Check text contrast, perspective and reflections at the final viewing size.
Do not claim that a file supports a specific adjustment just because other mockups do. If the download has no controls for a feature, treat that feature as fixed.
5. Export a presentation copy
Keep the layered working file for your own editing. Export a flattened image for the intended presentation: JPEG for a photograph-like scene or PNG when transparency is needed. Check the final dimensions and inspect the exported file before sending it.
If the artwork does not update
- Confirm that you saved the Smart Object document, not only the main PSD.
- Check whether the correct Smart Object is visible in the parent document.
- Read the included instructions for linked objects or multiple design surfaces.
- Check the required Photoshop version with the creator.
